Other Work

Before my focus shifted to freelance investigative work, these are the highlights of some of the clips I had published during my time as a staff writer or through other opportunities I was given while at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Sparse turnout at Trump Rally

Published in DCReport April 11, 2022

When David Cay Johnston reached out to one of my professors looking for students to help with an ongoing series DCReport was working on, she put him in touch with myself and a long-time colleague of mine, Arabella Saunders. The assignment was for us to go to a Trump rally in Selma, NC, and report on the events of the day undercover. Johnston didn't want us to identify ourselves as reporters, since journalists aren't allowed to freely mingle with the crowd or take pictures outside of designated areas, so we had to take notes on our cell phones and remain extremely cautious of the interactions and conversations we were having. The next day we were asked to write up a brief impressionistic piece on the experience, and this is what came out. Click here to read.

The Civil War ended in a small farmhouse in Durham

Published on CBS17.com April 11, 2022

While Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865 is considered the emblematic end of the Civil War, the vast majority of the Confederacy’s forces had yet to lay down their arms. The largest troop surrender of the war was negotiated days later in a farmhouse near what would become Durham, North Carolina. Confederate Gen. Joseph Johnston disobeyed Confederate President Jefferson Davis and agreed to the terms that saved the state from further destruction and ended the conflict in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. The farmstead, which still stands today in northeast Durham and is on the National Register of Historic Places, has come to be known as Bennett Place. This article, which I submitted through UNC's Media Hub wire before CBS17 picked it up, explores the story of Bennett Place. Click here to read. (Photo is a free stock image provided by Upslash)
